Winery Dúzsi from Szekszard in southern Hungary is a real family business. Founded in 1994 with a small vineyard and since then expanded into one of the leading wineries in the region. They specialize in rosé and red wines and work mainly with native grapes. The vineyards have expanded considerably over time. Just like the family that now has seven children. And everyone works in the wine business. Because the Dúzsi family is a very enterprising family.
In 1994 Tamas Duzsi started a 3.3 hectare vineyard in Szekszárd, planted with Kékfrankos. He is a descendant of a Swabian winemaking family and so shortly after the fall of the Wall, he saw his chance to restore a family tradition. Over time, the vineyards have expanded to approximately 40 hectares. In addition, the family works with various grape growers with a total of 20 hectares of vineyards, whose grapes go to Dúzsi.
The Dúzsi family mainly works with indigenous grape varieties. Experimenting with unusual blends or varietal wines is a family hobby. In their vineyards they can choose from Kékfrankos (Blaufrankisch), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zweigelt, Ezerfürtű, Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Pinot Noir, Zenit, Blauburger, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Kadarka, Portugieser, Menoir and Alibernet.
The family mainly makes red wines and a lot of rosé, from almost all the black grapes available to them. With this they have built up a solid reputation in Hungary (and far beyond) as perhaps the best rosé producer in the country. They are kept in traditional Hungarian 'loess cellars' in rows dug into the hills, a tourist attraction but also an ideal place for aging wines.
The size of the family grew with the expansion of the vineyards. Tamas and his wife now have seven children, the oldest of which have already left the nest and have children of their own. The rest (besides their school or study) work on the wine company. For the very enterprising family, this is the most natural thing in the world.
