Koncho & Co is a medium-sized Georgian wine company that produces both conventional wines and (orange) wines from the Qvevri (large amphorae). Koncho is located in the town of Kvareli at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. There is a lot of black slate in the vineyards here. The winemakers are Georgian but trained in Germany. They only use typical Georgian grape varieties. Many of Koncho's wines, including the orange wines, are aged in wood.
Country | Georgia |
Region | Kakheti |
Wine maker | Koncho & Co |
Grape varieties | Mtsvivani Kachuri |
Terroir | The grapes are harvested from twenty-year-old vines from the winery's own vineyards. They lie on a bottom of black slate, at the foot of the Caucausus. Thanks to the cooling of the mountains, they can reach optimal ripeness. The slate gives minerality and structure. |
Harvest method | handpicked |
Vinification | The grapes are crushed and then transferred together must and steam to a traditional clay vessel in Qvevri, where the wine is fermented and left on the chacha until the first heat of spring, probably until April of the following year. After which the wine is removed from the chacha and served in 400 liter oak barrels. |
Impression | Golden yellow. For this type of wine relatively much fruit of peach and apricot in the scent. Mouth dried mango, pineapple and tutti frutti. Fresh tamarind acids, hazelnut and a bit of tannin in the finish. |
Alcohol | 13.00 % |
Did you know? | The Mtsvivani Kachuri was nearly extinct until a few years ago. Only Koncho had a vineyard the size of a football field. Koncho has started actively cultivating the grape and has enabled other winemakers to do the same. There are now several winemakers who make wine from the Mtsvivani Kachuri grape. |
